Our Favourite Dog Walks Around Dingwall

One of the joys of being based in Dingwall is the variety of walks right on our doorstep — from easy flat strolls to proper hill viewpoints. Here are some of the genuine local routes the dogs in our care love most. We always pick the walk to suit each dog's age, energy and the weather on the day.

Dingwall Canal & the Cromarty Firth

Right in town, the short canal leads down to the Cromarty Firth — flat, easy and full of birdlife. It's perfect for a relaxed, sniffy walk and ideal for older dogs or pups who like a gentle, steady pace.

Tulloch Castle from Dingwall

A lovely walk straight from the town up towards the historic Tulloch Castle, mixing quiet streets with woodland paths. A gentle climb with a good leg-stretch — usually around 1.5 to 2 hours at a walking pace.

The Macdonald Monument & the Firth

A steady climb up to the Macdonald Monument rewards you with grand views over Dingwall and the Cromarty Firth, before heading back down towards the water. A satisfying couple of hours and great for a dog with a bit more energy.

Knockfarrel & the Peffery Way

For the more adventurous, the iron-age hill fort of Knockfarrel is a fantastic viewpoint over the town and firth, linked by the Peffery Way path between Dingwall and Strathpeffer. The full circuit is a bigger day out, but a shorter section of the Peffery Way makes a brilliant there-and-back walk on its own.

A short drive: Touchstone Maze & Brahan Estate

Just up the road near Strathpeffer, Blackmuir Wood hides the quirky Touchstone Maze — a labyrinth of standing stones that's lovely woodland walking. And the dog-friendly Brahan Estate near Maryburgh has thousands of acres of peaceful paths to explore.

A quick word on safety

Wherever we walk, we follow the Scottish Outdoor Access Code — keeping dogs on the lead around livestock, ground-nesting birds, roads and open water. And in summer we always check the conditions first; see our guide to walking your dog in hot weather for why that matters.
